Travel | Europe: The Netherlands, Amsterdam

I wouldn't mind seeing this every day.

I wouldn’t mind seeing this every day.

Not too long ago, Kat and I had the opportunity to visit Holland. Easily the cleanest, freshest, and most efficient place we visited, it was my second favorite destination. We were able to bike all over the surrounding areas since we stayed outside the city. Biking into Amsterdam main was only about 20km, which sounds like a lot, but it isn’t.

Dutch is a comical language at face value. Gefeliciteerd! Also, beplanting... bee planting.

The best part about biking everywhere was the constant access to a bike lane. I would say the scenery and nature and all that, but, it’s very difficult to appreciate the smell of wildflowers, the sounds of bees, or the beautiful landscapes when you have to constantly be on guard to bad drivers, inattentive pedestrians or rogue cyclists. Not a thing, in the Netherlands. Everyone follows all the traffic guidelines and it’s really amazing. That sort of efficiency and trust allows the freedom to smell the chocolate from the chocolate factory without worrying about Texting Tabitha and Road Rage Randy.

I don't know how to look happy.

I don’t know how to look happy.

I don’t like having my picture taken. Personally, I find the results to be manufactured and fake-feeling. Maybe everyone feels that way when they see a non-candid picture of themselves, and that’s why we try to create real moments when we photograph. Anyway, I don’t think there’s much hope for my future in male modeling, nor for comedy. I’m keeping the clog jokes at bay.

It's like when someone is really upset on the inside, but totally fine on the outside, except completely the opposite of that.

I promise to limit myself to one pun. That is a massive clog. That does not count as a pun; it is literally a massive clog. It was especially awesome to watch a master craftsman show the process of clog-making from before industrialization. Before the long drying process, after the clog has been shaped, the wood is so chock-full of water, you can press your mouth to the foothole, creating a seal, and, by forcefully blowing out air, water will come pouring out of the wood itself.

You know what they say about ladies with big feet.

Katherine is, always has been, and always will be more photogenic than me. Dancing and being generally pretty do help. Still. Envy.

The most expensive clog in the world.

Ok, I’ll stop clogging up the blog (ekekekekek).

This is a chicken. Chickens make me happy, which is why my usual RBF is not present. Unfortunately, to make up for my nice smile, I have been caught in the middle of blinking and look like I might be a reptilian overlord in charge of the New World Order.

Near the mills and the clog museum, there was an animal farm/ice cream parlor?
I’m not sure the connection, but I got told off for trying on a bear skin cloak that, “I could not afford, so should not try.” Well, if it’s such a luxury piece, perhaps don’t hang it on a rack next to normal sweaters? On this rack, 7th grade English teacher, this rack, The King in the North.

Just a few more snippets for now. I will spend some time to talk about Angelo and Laura, but I’ll save it for the end.

This is the goat dog at the animal farm I mentioned. He fiercely directs the goats and other critters by barking at them until the obey. He doesn't herd much, because all the animals are penned in by moats, seen above, and are unable to leave the small square plots of land except through a small gateway. Smart system! The animals eat the squares that are overgrown while the recently grazed squares regrow.

D’awwwww

Here is one of my favorite pictures. This is the living room at Angelo and Laura’s town home, located in Zandaam. They are both Italians who moved to Holland for work and to continue their relationship. Angelo taught us how to make risotto. Laura recommended an awesome jazz cafe. More than anything, this picture makes me look European, which, when traveling in Europe, is the goal.

I’ll have more adventures for you later!
Cheers,
-M
